For those of you who follow or read my blog, I want to share some exciting news. I am moving the blog and all of its current content to this new site: ILoveKent.net. The new site is a Word Press blog, has an easy-to-remember URL and it will contain a business directory as well as news separated by category: Crime, Shopping, Dining, Entertainment, Education, Events, etc.

The site is under construction so it isn't "pretty yet," but I hope to have it done by the end of March. In the meantime, I'm open to your ideas and suggestions.

15 "johns" arrested on Kent's West Hill 3/12

Kent Police Chief Steve Strachan reports that 15 "johns" were arrested on Kent's West Hill on Thursday, March 12, 2009 in a prostitution sting operation. This was one in a series of arrests in connection with reducing crime and prostitution in that area of Kent. For more information, please contact the Kent Police Department at (253) 856-5200.

Mural Contest to Replace Graffiti at West Hill Skate Park

The West Hill Skate Park turns 10 years old this year, and it’s time for a new look. Kent Parks, Recreation & Community Services is looking for talented Kent artists to design a mural that will be spray-painted on the skate bowls. Any Kent resident can submit a drawing and also apply to judge the entries. Drawings will be accepted until April 30.

The park, located on Reith Road and 42nd Avenue South, was built three years after the City’s first skate park, Kent Lions Skate Park on West Smith. According to Parks Director Jeff Watling, “The bowls are frequently tagged with graffiti, and users say that the all-over gray color makes it hard to estimate depth. We feel the solution to both problems is a colorful mural. We’re hoping the winner might also be an in-line skater and/or skateboarder, someone who already uses the park. But the judges will ultimately decide.”

The winning design will be announced on Friday, May 29, and the painting must be completed by June 30. Kent Police received a grant to provide the paint, and Parks staff can help the winning artist recruit volunteers to paint the mural in time for the park’s 10-year anniversary celebration. T-BIRDS 2009 PLAYOFF TICKETS GO ON SALE MARCH 11

Games 3 and 4 of first round series will be at ShoWare Center on March 24 and 25

Kent, March 10, 2009 - Tickets to the Seattle Thunderbirds first round playoff series of the 2009 WHL Playoffs will go on sale Wednesday, March 11, at 10 a.m.

The T-Birds will play Games 3 and 4 of their first round playoff series at ShoWare Center on Tuesday, March 24, and Wednesday, March 25, against an opponent to be determined. Game time is 7:05 p.m. for both games.

Playoff tickets will be available for purchase online at www.seattlethunderbirds.com or at the ShoWare Center box office. Playoff ticket prices for the first round are $18 and $24.

The T-Birds are currently in sixth place in the Western Conference playoff standings. They are one point behind the Kamloops Blazers for fifth place with one game in hand. The T-Birds are eight points ahead of the Everett Silvertips, who are in seventh place, and both teams have four games remaining.

While the T-Birds are looking to finish as high as fifth in the Western Conference, the Spokane Chiefs and Kelowna Rockets, possible first round opponents, are separated by one point in their battle for third place in the Western Conference standings.

The T-Birds first round opponent, and dates of Games 1 and 2 of the series, might not be determined until the final game of the regular season, on March 15 against the Silvertips.

All rounds of the 2009 WHL Playoffs are a best-of- seven format.

The T-Birds have four regular season games left, the next coming on Wednesday, March 11, when they face the Prince George Cougars at ShoWare Center at 7:05 p.m.

I love Spiro's Greek Island, so I was excited when a friend passed on the link to this blurb in The Seattle Times. Read it here.

I agree with the writer: the atmosphere is ordinary, but the food is spectacular and surprisingly affordable. I've been there for both lunch and dinner and have always loved their food. In particular, I like their Greek salads, gyros, saganaki and, of course, the baklava. If you are looking for a change of pace or an affordable night out, try Spiro's on First Avenue South in downtown Kent.

Kent Service Club Community Pride Day March 21

Kent’s service clubs will celebrate Spring with the first annual Service Club Community Pride Day on Saturday, March 21, 8:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. The graffiti paint-out event is being co-sponsored by Kent Police and Kent Parks, Recreation & Community Services. The goal is to eliminate graffiti, reduce vandalism and keep Kent clean, beautiful and safe for children, families, seniors and visitors.

Teams of four or five will be coming from local Kent Kiwanis, Rotary, Lions, Soroptomist, and Quota Clubs. Volunteers will meet at 8:00 a.m. at Town Square Plaza, located at Second Avenue and Harrison Street in downtown Kent. Refreshments will be provided by the 4th & Meeker Starbucks. After receiving instructions and supplies, the teams will fan out in their vehicles to assigned “hot spot” areas. At the end of the morning, the groups will return to Town Square Plaza for lunch, courtesy of Chipotle Mexican Grill.

Service club members and their families (including children 16 or older) are welcome to register as part of a team or as individuals. Please pre-register by March 13th. Teams will be finalized and assigned to their locations on the morning of the event. Supplies and paint are paid for by a graffiti abatement grant from the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs (WASPC). Synopsis: Mayor Cooke's State of the City Address

Hello, readers and I Love Kent followers. I attended Kent Mayor Suzette Cooke's "State of the City" address yesterday at the ShoWare Center. I did not attend as a reporter, but I can't help but take notes. For those of you who weren't able to attend or watch the online version, here is a brief synopsis of her presentation.

About the ShoWare Center

- Mayor's speech was the first major speaking event at the new ShoWare Center.
- ShoWare Center opened on January 2 with 10,000 in attendance. The Seattle Thunderbirds accommodated with a win!
- ShoWare Center is the FIRST green arena in the United States!
- It is anticipated that the ShoWare Center will bring in 400,000 people and $16 million in revenue to Kent each year.
- It is the city's most significant economic project since Kent Station.
- City has signed a five-year lease to use the Park and Ride on James Street for ShoWare Center parking.
- The building was completed in 17 months with more than 100 city staff involved in the project.
- It won't cost taxpayers any extra money to have the ShoWare Center in Kent.

Other City Topics
- City is reducing operating expenses, delaying hires and vehicle replacements and eliminating contracts to offset a drop in revenue.
- As of 12/31/08, city revenue dropped 14%.
- City workers who are unionized are working with the city to cut costs to avoid layoffs.
- 28 employees have not be replaced, so current city staff is trying to meet resident needs despite the manpower shortfall.
- "Our employees have been wonderful."
- Alaska Copper and Brass Company is moving to Kent, bringing at least 100 new jobs to the area.
- The city has $50 million in pending projects in the permitting process.
- Other developments: Hampton Inn is building a 100-room facility on 64th; a new office building and banquet hall is being built near Top Foods (at the site of the old skate center); and GRCC is expanding, creating space for 700 additional students to attend the two-year college.
- City needs to focus on bringing high quality downtown residents to the area to access our stores and businesses.
- City will encourage mixed use urban buildings.
- City is looking at changes in the permitting process to make it easier to do business in Kent.
- Neighborhood program has established 15 new neighborhood councils. The West Hill neighborhood council has reduced crime in its area by 40%!
- City wants to create more affordable entertainment including offering free outdoor movies at Town Plaza this summer.
- City of Kent sent more than 3,000 criminals to jail last year.
- More than 1,000 city staff and residents have been trained for emergency response.
- Kent was third last year (among cities its size) in participating in the National Night Out.
- New bus route to connect West Hill, The Lakes and other critical areas to each other.
- Panther Lake Annexation is still under consideration. It would add 23,000 more residents to Kent, but it would cost more to serve that area than the City would bring in additional revenue. City is working with King County Council to see how those residents can still be adequately served.
- The City is actively seeking a solution to the parking garage problem.
- New Kent School District superintendent is a big proponent of partnering, so the City is looking forward to working with him.

Mayor Cooke's State of the City Address Today

Today is Mayor Suzette Cooke's annual "State of the City" address. The event will be held at the ShoWare Center, 625 W. James St., Kent from 11:30 am to 1 p.m. Tickets are $30 each. The event will also be streamed live online at www.choosekent.com.

The Mayor’s address will focus on the local economy, public safety and improving the quality of life for residents of Kent.

Kent Station Announces "Earning Dollars for Kent Scholars" through March

Kent Station Kicks off its Annual March Dining Fundraiser: Earning Dollars for Kent Scholars

Kent, WA, March 3, 2009 – Kent Station announced this week that it is kicking off Earning Dollars for Kent Scholars, an annual fundraiser where Kent Station shoppers and visitors can win prizes while raising scholarship money for local high school graduates attending Green River Community College.

Throughout the month of March, Kent Station shoppers and visitors are encouraged to dine at all of Kent Station’s eateries and fill out an Earning Dollars for Kent Scholars postcard. For each completed postcard, Kent Station will donate $1 to the Kent Station–Green River Community College Scholarship fund. Participating diners are automatically eligible to win one of 12 prizes, including Kent Station gift cards from $25 to $500 and iPod nanos from The Mac Store. Individuals can enter up to 13 times, once for each Kent Station restaurant, café, or eatery they visit.

“Kent Station is proud to be an active participant in the Kent community,” Kent Station General Manager John Hinds said. “With the support of the community, we can give our local students the opportunity to continue their education.”

Now in its third year, the Kent Station–Green River Community College Scholarship fund is awarded to qualifying Kent area high school students based on financial need. The more postcards received, the greater the number of scholarships awarded, and the more chances Kent Station diners have to win. A complete list of rules is available online and at participating restaurants.

“We are pleased to partner with Kent Station to provide scholarships to Kent area graduates. Kent Station has been a major supporter in helping us work toward our goal of doubling our scholarship program by 2011,” said Josh Gerstman, Director of Development for the Green River Community College Foundation. “Of the 190 scholarships awarded through the Foundation, the Kent Station scholarship is the only one specifically focused on recent graduates of a Kent area High School.”

Since the Earning Dollars for Kent Scholars fundraiser began in 2007, Kent Station has awarded six scholarships totaling nearly $10,000. Samantha Phelps, a graduate of Kent Meridian High School, was one of three 2008 scholarship recipients. She is enrolled in GRCC’s general studies program.

“I am finally the first in my family to graduate high school, and I am not going to let anyone or anything stop me on my way to being the first in my family to graduate from college. Getting this scholarship means the world to me,” Phelps said.

Love Bound

My sweetheart of 5+ years Jim and I were married this Valentine's Day at our home in Kent. For anyone who knows us, we are a loving but practical, rather than romantic, couple. To marry us, we chose Cindi LaMar of Love Bound in Renton to perform the wedding ceremony. She put together a ceremony and vows that suited us. She was a joy to work with, and we'll remember the ceremony always. It was a beautiful day.

Darren Motamedy: an amazing teacher

Thanks for all of you who follow my blog. I apologize for not being more consistent lately, but with my wedding coming up on 2/14, I've had my hands full.

That doesn't mean that things in Kent haven't been hopping though! There is so much going on here. People are excited about the ShoWare Events Center, changes at Kent Station, the new Costco in nearby Covington and new shops going into downtown Kent.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Darren Motamedy, an award-winning jazz musician and band director for the Kent School Districts. He was not only talented, but he was also patient, kind, amusing and surprisingly humble. I can see why his students look up to him and how teaching them to play music is such a passion for him. Watch for my profile on him in an upcoming issue of Kent Magazine.

Kent's ShoWare Center Opens Tomorrow!

New changes to Bittersweet

If you haven't been to Bittersweet Restaurant in the last month and a half, consider planning a visit there soon. In addition to their updated lunch menu featuring new sandwiches and the chef's signature parsnip "fries," Bittersweet is now serving breakfast seven days a week, featuring homemade biscuits, hot cinnamon rolls and their signature baked egg dish.

Kent - an unexpected winter wonderland

Growing up in Indiana, I enjoyed the massive lake effect snow we got every winter. Our cities were well-equipped to tackle the snow and ice, so we didn't miss school very often...but there was always plenty of snow to play in. I remember snow tunnels, forts, sledding until my fingers were frozen, and snowball fights.

Fast forward to 2008 and I am in awe of the snow we've seen in Kent this year. I've lived in Washington for five and a half years and have never seen snow like this here. We have at least 10 inches at our house, not to mention thick layers of ice. Some roads are closed, others are impassable and the rest are just plain messy. So if you have to travel this week, please be careful. There is more snow and ice to come. Meanwhile, I'll enjoy watching it from my office window as I make the most of this weather-induced break.

Last week I learned that the Kent Salvation Army would not receive its usual bounty of toys from the Salvation Army distribution center in Seattle for its holiday Toys 'n Joy program. Instead, it would have to rely on local donations. I put out a plea for help, and you responded generously. Some of you brought toys to me to drop off, some of you went directly to the Kent Salvation Army on South Central Avenue with your new toys, and I picked up a few from your offices and delivered them.

To all who gave, or hoped we'd find a solution, I thank you. Single handedly, one person would not have made a significant difference, but as a caring community, we were able to provide gifts for dozens of Kent children this Christmas. Thank you and Happy Holidays to you and your families! I'm proud to know you.

Kent Salvation Army Needs Toys!

Hello, friends.

I recently did a story for Kent Magazine on the Kent Salvation Army. I met the staff and several volunteers of this passionate organization. Our local office is small, but it provides the area with much needed services, particularly in these hard times. I just learned today that our local Salvation Army will not be benefiting from the Seattle area's Toys 'n Joy toy drive, meaning they don't have any toys this year to give their clients.

I had bought several games that I was going to donate. Instead of donating them to the Toys for Joy program here (which will be distributed around the Seattle area but not to the Kent Salvation Army), I am going to give them directly to the Kent Salvation Army on Central Avenue. If you'd like to help, please help me spread the word by forwarding this e-mail to your friends, co-workers and neighbors. This Christmas will be a tough one for many in our area, and I want to try to do what I can to help. I hope you'll join me.

If you haven't heard the news, let me be the first to announce that Renaissance Yarns is moving to Kent Station. The store will close its doors on East Meeker Street Sun., Nov. 30 - Tues., Dec. 2 and move to its new Kent Station location and open for business on Wed., Dec. 3.

Kent Station is kicking off the holiday season with Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with the Rainier Brass Ensemble, at 10 a.m. on Sat., November 29 at the Kent Station Plaza. The jolly couple will be available to greet shoppers afterward at the Santa House where they can have their photos taken or they can take Santa's patented "naughty or nice" test.

Kent Winterfest: Kids 'n Kritters pet walk

For the second year in a row, Kent Winterfest - scheduled for Saturday, December 6 - is holding a Kids 'n Kritters Pet Walk for kids and adults. Walk your pets on a fun one mile-walk that weaves in and out of the streets of downtown Kent. King County Animal Care and Control will bring adoptable dogs, and Another Chance Pet Adoptions will have adoptable cats.

Register by bringing one large, clean bath towel or blanket to McMonigle Veterinary Clinic on Central Avenue. If you register before Nov. 24., you'll receive a free long-sleeved t-shirt the day of the walk.

All friendly dogs are welcome and must be on leashes. Cats and smaller pets can be carried or put in carriers or pulled in your own wagons. Costumes are not required but are encouraged. Free pet photos after the walk!

The walk begins at The Morford Family Carousel at Town Square Plaza and will be led by Santa. See you there!

Perk Up Place for Sandwiches, Salads & Other Tasty Treats

One of my favorite spots for lunch has become Perk Up Place at the corner of Gowe and First Avenue South (inside Titusville Station). I have tried several of their salads (grilled chicken salad and the shrimp louie). They're made individually by Shelly or Sue, and are made with fresh ingredients and in enormous portions. I had the shrimp salad for lunch and dinner yesterday and have enough left over for lunch today! I also tried a slice of Shelly's pumpkin bread which is homemade, and loaded with delicious spices. You have to try it!

Kent's Santa Don needs your help

This year is Santa Don and Christmas Carole (Vandel)'s last year as Santa in downtown Kent. This year our favorite holiday couple will be available to have pictures taken with children and pets at the Morford Carousel in the new Town Square Plaza in downtown Kent during the month of December. Bring your own camera and pictures are free. Their request: a donation to a local charity.

We live just outside the bus boundaries for my daughter's school, so I drive her to and from school every day, taking one of two well-traveled routes. Along those routes are dozens of kids waiting for the bus or walking to and from school. Although I'm normally a cautious driver anyway, I am particularly careful when driving on these roads. I am careful to do the speed limit, and I always watch for the students.

Unfortunately, that isn't true of every driver. Almost every day without fail, someone tailgates me, riding up on my bumper as if to push me along the road faster. They seem to have a need for me to know that I'm too slow for their tastes. Nothing irritates me more, especially when kids' lives are at stake. I try to understand their behavior - maybe they're having a bad day, aren't paying attention or are late for work - but nothing seems as important to me as the safety of those we share the road with. If you are one of these drivers, I ask you to please respect the safety of the students and other drivers drive a little more carefully. For kids' sake, don't tailgate.

Everyone's invited to attend an all day event on November 4th, Election Day 2008 at Earthworks. We will be running the returns all day, and probably well into the night. We will have some stuff to nibble on and some light libations (after 5:00 P.M.) as well. Perhaps some plain ol' WHITE water, RED wine, or BLUE martini's...who knows?

Also, quite noteworthy, this is NOT A PARTISAN EVENT. Did you know Kent has a Salvation Army?

I learned last month that Kent has its own branch of the Salvation Army. I wasn't aware of that. Located on South Central Avenue, the Kent office is open part-time and it serves the Kent, Auburn, Pacific and Algona communities. Run by Shirley Harris, the office provides a lot of services I didn't realize were available including: eviction prevention assistance, utility assistance, emergency clothing and shelter, holiday gift programs and more.

I also learned that the majority of the Kent office's funding is provided during its holiday "red kettle" program at local stores and shops. All of the money stays local, so please keep that in mind as you shop around the community this holiday season. There are many in our community who need assistance and this is a great way to provide it through an agency we know and trust.

Cypriana - Downtown Kent

This week I attended the Grand Opening of Cypriana on First Avenue South in downtown Kent. It was a fun celebration with tasty treats and some wonderful products and services. Owner Susan Thomas makes custom slipcovers and bedding. I perused the fabrics (natural, organic and "regular") and she has some beautiful selections. After seeing samples of her work, I can see why her slipcovers and bedding are so in demand. She has a great eye for style and a wonderful attention to detail.

She also has added some new products since first opening a month ago. With friends and family having babies this fall, I was particularly impressed with the natural and organic baby lines she carries. The items are a little pricier than traditional baby clothes, toiletries and diapers, but the quality and the fact that everything is organic is SO worth it. In addition to buying a luscious chocolate brown Dreamsacks throw for my family room, I picked up the cutest bib and "baby sack" for my step-daughter's newest arrival.

Kelly Latte's on 132nd (near 240th)

Despite the fact that I think the business name is incorrectly punctuated, I love Kelly Latte's on 132nd in Kent. It has a wide range of hot and cold beverages featuring everything from tea and hot chocolate to mochas and smoothies. It even has a special line of kids' drinks like ladybug soda. I love their peach smoothie, and the fresh-baked mini donuts are yummy. I like the cinnamon sugar ones - delicious! They have as good a variety of drinks as Starbucks, if not better, and the baristas are helpful and friendly. Prices are reasonable too!

I also love their clever signs. Every day they offer a new drink or a 25 cent discount of some kind. This month's theme includes Halloween discounts: 25 cents off if you have candy corn, a pumpkin or a black cat. Each day is different, so it is always fun to see what their latest promotion is.

Roxanne Lapping, Massage Therapist at Heartbeat

Last Friday I decided it was time for a massage, so I made an appointment with massage therapist extraordinaire Roxanne Lapping. The experience was much different than I expected. I had been to the studio before, so I knew the decor was beautiful and peaceful with amazing artwork and antique furniture. What I didn't know was that Roxanne knows much more than how to give a good massage. She could tell how healthy I was by the feel of my muscles and skin and how they reacted to touch, but she was also able to sense that something else was going on - perhaps a food allergy! Fish Pedicures Come to Kent Station this FRIDAY!!!

Have you ever heard of fish pedicures? It seems that I'm the last to know. Somehow I missed the media buzz this summer when fish pedicures hit the East Coast. Anyway, Tweety from Peridot Nail Salon called me today to let me know that she is starting fish pedicures at her salon this Friday. $20 for 15 minutes. In case you don't know what one is (maybe we were under the same rock?), a fish pedicure is when you dunk your feet in fish-infested, warm water. These little fish, called doctor fish, nibble on your dead skin, leaving your feet soft and smooth afterward. Who knew? If you haven't visited Earthworks on the corner of First Avenue South and Titus Streets in downtown Kent, make time to stop by. This jewelry boutique, owned by Steve & Donna St. Louis, is one of my favorite jewelry stores. I bought a gold & silver ring designed by Steve there a few months ago, and I just love it. It's pretty, funky and different. They have unique jewelry, hand created by several different artists. They have a great selection, particularly of wedding jewelry. I stopped by last week to check out wedding bands for my fiance and they had a good selection ranging from affordable to pricey. What I liked is that there were unique choices...not just your usual gold and silver bands with the occasional diamond tossed in. In addition to their inventory, they also do customized designs, jewelry cleaning and appraisals - your one stop jewelry shop, I guess you could say. Stop in next time you're downtown and make sure you tell them Dana said, "hi!"

Renaissance Yarns Kicks Off Fundraiser for Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

Nancy Skorupa, owner of Renaissance Yarns, recently kicked off a fundraiser to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Skorupa and a group of talented local knitters met at Bittersweet restaurant in

Kent

earlier this summer to create an Aran square knit throw to be awarded to the winner of a special prize drawing. Tickets for the drawing are $5 each and are available at Renaissance Yarns at 207 East Meeker Street in downtown

Kent

. All proceeds for the drawing will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The drawing will be held in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month with details to be announced later.

Skorupa said this is the second year her knitting group has sponsored the fundraiser. Last year the group raised just over $1,600. For this year’s fundraiser, the group put together a throw of 20 squares of different designs all of the same color – passionately pink, the signature color for breast cancer. Most of the knitters participating in the project are from the Kent area; the group also includes a knitter from Salt Lake City.

“This is such a great project,” Skorupa said. “Not only will the winner get to take home this beautiful throw, but they’ll be contributing to a cause that is near and dear to all of us.”

Yesterday a friend and I met at Shindig in downtown Kent for drinks. I had heard about the new martini bar from several friends and was anxious to check it out. Nestled in the middle of First Avenue South, Shindig is a simply-decorated, chic little neighborhood martini bar. The view of the charming neighborhood struck me as did the contrast between the all black interior and the sunlight streaming in from the wall of windows that creates the bar's storefront. The owner, Dave, was a charming Al Pacino-like man - but better looking - who clearly loves his bar and is proud of his specialty drinks. Making a friendly host, Dave seemed to know everyone who walked in. I sampled the Pink Lemon Drop which was deliciously different and a tad sweet - just the way I like them! We also ordered an antipasto plate from the tapas menu. It was more than enough for two and was quite tasty! The place could use some artwork and perhaps a woman's touch in the restroom - but I hope Shindig is here to stay. It adds a touch of class for those of us who are tired of the usual sports bars and neighborhood pubs. It was a welcome change of pace!

A Zoo on East Hill?

OK, I'll admit it. That was just a clever title to get you to read this posting, but if you're here, I succeeded. Allow me to explain the new "zoo" in Kent.

I live on the East Hill and our back yard is lined with trees and shrubs with a green belt on the other side. As a result, we have seen all sorts of suburban wild life including a handful of neighborhood cats. Here's the thing. They tend to congregate in my yard because (a) it isn't fenced in and (b) I feed one of the stray cats - the only one I know NOT to have a home. I feed him every morning and whenever he stops by during the day. I occasionally give him treats or a bowl of milk. He's so skinny; I couldn't forgive myself if he starved to death because I didn't do something about it.

The problem is that every other animal in the neighborhood seems attracted to the cat food too...other cats, squirrels, Stellar Jays, slugs and the other night a possum came up on the deck four times for a little bite of Friskies! At first I thought it was a huge rat - something I've never seen live - thank goodness - except for in a zoo exhibit or science class. When I saw how big the animal was though, I realized it was a possum...and not a cute one either!

My family used to tease me because of the cats that would visit. They affectionately (I think) called me the cat lady. After the possum though, I've been promoted to the position of head zoo keeper. I wonder what animals will be next - maybe I should start bringing in that food dish at night so I don't have to find out!

Car Prowls on the Rise in Kent

I received this note from KDP today. It's important news - and good advice - so I thought I'd share it:

The Kent Police Department has had an increase in case reports for car prowls. Please read this information carefully and take the following steps TODAY to avoid being the victim of these crimes.

A few SIMPLE steps can prevent your car from being a target for a car prowler or thief. A car prowl is when someone breaks into a car to commit a crime. Typically, car prowlers break into a car because they see something that may be of value. That includes shopping bags, backpacks, change, anything that is visible to a passerby as they look into your car.

Follow these steps every time you park your car and decrease the likelihood of being a victim!

Keep personal and valuable belongings out of sight. Do not invite a break-in by leaving valuables such as cameras, CDs, IPODs, money, computers, stereos, bags, packages or shopping bags (including re-usable bags) in plain sight. Take them with you out of your car or discreetly lock them in your trunk if you cannot remove them when you park. DO THIS EVERY TIME YOU PARK!
Keep all doors locked and windows up at all times when you park. A lock is only effective if you use it!
Secure your vehicle in your garage or park in a well-lit and highly visible area. Criminals look for cars that are isolated and parked in dark areas.
Use your alarm system at all times.
If you have a GPS system, remove it when you park your car. And, remove the GPS holder as well. Criminals know that a GPS holder means there is probably a GPS somewhere in the car! Out of sight, out of mind!
If you see a person looking into cars and appears suspicious, call 9-1-1.

After you do all of these steps and you are still concerned about auto theft, consider using a steering wheel locking device, also knows as The Club. The Kent Police Employees Benevolent Association (KPEBA) sells the Club at an extremely discounted rate: $15 for a car version and $20 for a truck version. This is over half of the cost you'll see them for in stores. All proceeds benefit Kent youth too!

The Kent Police Department is here to work with you to prevent crime. Please take these steps today. Share them with your family and friends. Post them in your work place. These simple steps, done every time you park, will significantly reduce the likelihood that the criminal will target your car.

Mamma Mia at Kent Station AMC Theatres

A friend and I took our three teen daughters to see Mamma Mia at Kent Station's AMC Theatres last Friday. It wasn't a movie I would ordinarily have picked out to see, but my friend really wanted to see it so we agreed. After I watched the trailer online, I was excited. Granted the movie's plot is a bit contrived, but the overall experience was fantastic. I can't remember when I've had more fun at a movie. Who knew that Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan could sing?!! Hint - if you haven't seen the movie yet, Meryl has a great voice and Pierce, well, at least he looks good! Anyway, this is a "must see" chick flick. Grab your girlfriends and head to Kent Station before this movie is gone for the summer. Mamma Mia will make you laugh, cry and sing. It's a movie you'll never forget!

Cypriana - The Natural Home Store

First Avenue South is about to get a new tenant - Cypriana, a natural home store featuring organic bedding and home bath items, custom made home decor (slipcovers, duvets, etc.), baby items and more. I just met Susan Thomas, the owner, yesterday and she is very excited about her new shop. She said there is such a need for one location where people can buy organic products, and she promises her store will feature mostly organic items! Cypriana is tentatively planned to open the week of September 9th, and Susan plans to participate in the First Avenue Block Party on Friday, September 12th. More details coming soon!

The Alki Bakery - Kent, WA

I've heard of The Alki Bakery in Seattle, but have never been to one. Today I was surprised when a friend of mine took me to their Kent location - who knew?!! Located off 68th on 72nd Avenue South in Centerpoint Corporate Park, the cafe had the most wonderful selections. Similar to the more widely-recognized Panera, you have a wide range of selections of soups, sandwiches and salads, along with delicious-looking desserts and fresh fruit. You wait in line, place your order and they bring it to your table. My friend had the Mahi-Mahi Fish Tacos and I had the Italian Grinder. I can't speak for her meal - though she seemed to enjoy it - but my sandwich was delicious. Served on a soft French roll, the sandwich was full of fresh salami, cheese, peppers, dressing and more. It was tasty, fresh and very affordable! Guests can get their meals to go, eat in the cafe itself or take their meal alfresco. Two meals plus fountain drinks = $20. Thanks to Carol for treating me - I thoroughly enjoyed it!

A few years ago I had never heard of Cookie Lee jewelry. Maybe they didn't sell it in Indiana, but I've met several sales reps since moving to Kent. Everyone does something a little bit different, but my favorite Cookie Lee rep is Dena Brandt of Kent. She has a low pressure way about her, and she has a great collection of items to try on. She's even let me take a few items on a test run. In fact, for a PSA we filmed for Northwest Afternoon on KOMO4-TV for Wine, Women, Wow, Dena let us all wear some of her latest jewelry.

Dena is always decked out in her newest pieces, and usually has a catalog or display purse with her, so you'll know her when you see her! If you need something sparkly to set off your newest outfit or a gift for that hard-to-buy-for someone, give Dena a call. She loves to talk Cookie Lee!

One of my favorite downtown shops is Bella home & garden. Owned by Marci Wainhouse, this flower shop now has two locations: one on First Avenue South and the other at Kent Station. Marci has a fantastic eye for design, and she puts together the most beautiful floral arrangements I've ever seen. She also has a unique selection of indoor and outdoor plants. Her shops also feature fun home decor items and accessories like wine glasses, serving dishes, pasta, dips, soaps, lotions and more. It's a great place to pick up a gift for the friend who has everything or to buy something fun for yourself. I love visiting Bella - every time I go I discover something new!

Bittersweet on First Avenue South

After a two-year absence, I visited the Bittersweet restaurant on First Avenue South yesterday with a friend. Now owned by Sue Froyd, also the owner of Maggie's on Meeker, the restaurant was much the same as I remembered. The menu features fresh salads, sandwiches and homemade desserts...pretty standard fare, but the food was delicious and the service was good. I ordered the spinach salad which was outstanding. Just the right size and the light creamy pepper dressing was wonderful! A nice lunch at an affordable price. The only disappointment was that the menu featured a wine list, but the restaurant does not have a beer and wine license any more.

Heartbeat Yoga & Healing Arts

I once took a yoga class at a YWCA where the instructor was so far beyond my conservative sensibilities that I just couldn't relate. I could follow the poses, but I couldn't relax because the instructor was so "out there." My friend and I kept giggling every time our teacher said something off-the-wall (the violet drains in the floor will carry away your stress...) Anyway, I shied away from yoga after that but was reintroduced to it last year, when I met yoga instructor and co-owner Linda Lapping of Heartbeat Yoga & Healing Arts. I started with the viniyoga beginner series and loved it. Not only is Linda a wonderful instructor, but she's calm, patient and grounded not to mention incredibly flexible! The classes are small enough where she can give each student individual attention.

Her studio on First Avenue South in downtown Kent is also beautiful with its hard wood floors and soft lighting. In addition, to the yoga classes, the studio features spa services including massage by co-owner Roxanne Lapping. I have not had one of her massages yet, but a friend has and said Roxanne is wonderful. If you are looking for a yoga class with an experienced teacher or a relaxing massage, check out Heartbeat. You will love it!

The Grape Adventure

If you are a wine lover, check out The Grape Adventure on 132nd in Kent. Owned by Scott and Katie Jones, this wine shop has something for every wine lover. The store features an amazing selection of wines, wine serving items, glassware and accessories as well as gourmet chocolates and cheeses. The Grape Adventure also features a great tapas bar open for lunch and dinner. My fiance and I went last weekend to enjoy an afternoon out. We each tried 3 different wine flights (2 oz. pours), and we shared the cheesy garlic bread and cheese plate with fresh fruit and nuts. And, of course, we brought home a few bottles of wine to enjoy later. It was a nice treat!

If you don't know to look for it inside Titusville Station (corner of Gowe and First Avenue), you might miss The Perk-Up Place, but it is worth seeking it out. For breakfast, the deli has some great coffees and teas, and I love their whole wheat honey bagel. Perk-Up Place also offers lunch and catering. I've been to several events featuring owner Shelly's wraps and sandwiches. She has a great selection of fresh items and she always serves it with a smile. As an added bonus, the food is affordable! You can easily have lunch for $8 or less.

Downtown Kent has a handful of locally-owned restaurants. Here are a few of my favorites:

Spiro's Greek Isle - Open for lunch and dinner, this restaurant on First Avenue South has delicious, affordable Greek food. I recommend the gyros, Greek salad, baklava and the interesting selection of cocktails.

Archa Thai Bistro - Located on East Meeker across the street from Renaissance Yarns, this Thai restaurant has an elegant decor and the tastiest lunch specials. My favorite - Garlic Chicken. You can enjoy a nice lunch for less than $8.

Maggie's on Meeker - On West Meeker, this diner has the best breakfast sandwich in town and the entire staff is friendly, cheerful and remembers each and every customer. For an affordable breakfast you can't find anywhere else, check out Maggie's for breakfast or lunch.

Why I Love Kent

Originally from Indiana, I moved to Washington State five years ago. I lived in Bellingham for two and a half years and moved to Kent nearly three years ago. Kent isn't for everybody, but I love that it's close to Seattle while retaining its small town charm and diversity. It is a unique place with great people, wonderful restaurants and unique shops. I created this blog to tell people more about Kent, so they can learn about all that this town of 85,000 has to offer.
